  Je m'appelle Malenga et je suis artiste plasticien et musicien. Je suis né au Mozambique et j'ai près de 40 ans - on ne sait pas vraiment la date précise de mon anniversaire. Je suis de la tribu Makonde et le Shimakonde est ma langue-mère. Je parle aussi de Swahili, le Portugais et un peu de Anglais – pas trop le Français malheureusement. Je suis plutôt sculpteur, même si je m'aventure souvent dans la peinture et me considère plutôt un bon musicien et très bon compositeur. Je travaille le bois en utilisant les techniques traditionnelles de mon peuple que j'ai appris avec mon père, lui aussi sculpteur. Mais j'ai aussi fréquenté le cours de Beaux-Arts de l'Université du Porto, au Portugal, alors que trouve que mon travail est de plus en plus universel. Comme peintre je suis intéressé au mouvement et à la palette forte et contrastante de ma région. Mais la musique m’a toujours intéressé. Quand j’étais petit et habité dans un petit village au nord du Mozambique, je ne savais pas qu’on pouvait étudier la musique. C’était plus tard, au Maputo que j’ai vu pour la première fois une école de musique. La j’ai étudié le piano et la guitarre classique, mais ce n’était que beaucoup plus tard, déjà au Portugal, il fait 5 ans, que j’ai commencé à faire ma propre musique. J’ai près de 50 chansons maintenant, et je joue souvent au Portugal. Je suis presque marié avec Maria, une portugaise d’une trentaine d’années qui est en trend d’écrire ce texte. Elle parle aussi l’Anglais, l’Espagnol et le Portugais, bien sûr. Elle écrit comme métier, mais travaille aussi en design graphique. Tous les deux on a un très beau jeune garçon de 3 ans, qui se ressemble beaucoup à moi. Il s’appelle Ntimashi – «Cœur Sincére ».

The main focus of AZAN is to build a network and location for creating an independent program, including the resident artists, national and international artists. The key is to bring artists into a cultural context different from their own, in which they can thrive on cultural and social discourse and explore their own work, giving artists the opportunity to present their work and research.   I strongly believe in knowledge you gain trough DIY, in problem-solving through making. Working on different scales and materials is crucial as it pushes me to analyze and conceptualize a project from different perspectives and consider alternatives. More than anything, it is important to me to surround myself with objects that possess a certain fragility or to use materials with a story to focus on more imagination and less on consumption.

AZAN space welcome artists seeking a studio in an open space layout. Here artists can develop their work, research, collaborate and share ideas. AZAN holds an independent program connecting the resident artists with other artists. This program includes open studios, exhibitions, performances, and talks. AZAN will consider resident artists to participate in its program in a case-by-case basis. We also do gatherings for food, drinks and music.
